Excel (.xlsx) · works in Google Sheets · free, no email required

What's included

  • About 30 common site inspection items grouped by category
  • Pass / Fail / N/A dropdown on every item
  • Corrective action, responsible party, and due date columns
  • Photo reference column so evidence can be matched later
  • Header for project, inspector, date, weather, and sign-off
  • Summary tab that counts pass, fail, and N/A results

How to use the construction inspection checklist

  1. 1. Adapt the items to your job

Delete items that don't apply and add the ones your contract, owner, insurer, or jurisdiction requires. The categories are a starting point, not a complete safety or code-compliance checklist.

  2. 2. Walk the site and mark each item

Mark every line pass, fail, or N/A. Take a photo of each failure and write the photo file name or number in the photo reference column.

  3. 3. Assign every failure

Each failed item needs a corrective action, a responsible party, and a due date. A failure without an owner is just a note.

  4. 4. Sign, file, and re-inspect

Sign off in the header, file the checklist with that day's report, and re-check open failures on the next walk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a construction inspection checklist include?
A useful checklist groups items by area or hazard (access, housekeeping, fall protection, electrical, fire prevention, PPE, excavation, materials, and quality of work in place), records a pass, fail, or N/A result for each, and captures the corrective action, responsible party, due date, and photo evidence for every failure.
Does this checklist cover OSHA or building code requirements?
It covers common site safety and quality items, but it is not a complete OSHA or building code checklist. Adapt it to the regulations, contract requirements, and inspection types that apply to your project.
How often should construction site inspections happen?
It depends on your contract, insurer, and safety program. Many contractors walk the site daily and complete a documented inspection at least weekly, plus before key milestones such as concrete pours, cover-up, and turnover.
Is this inspection checklist template free?
Yes. The AECify construction inspection checklist is a free Excel (.xlsx) download. No email signup is required.

Outgrowing the spreadsheet?

A checklist spreadsheet works until the photos are in a camera roll and the PDF report has to be assembled by hand. See how AECify's construction inspection software keeps the log, attachments, and deadlines in one project record.
